If you have severe carotid artery disease, which too often leads to stroke, you should have an ultrasound of your neck. But in a randomized controlled study of 50 ml/day of pasteurized pomegranate juice, people with 70-90% blockages had 13%, 22%, 26%, and 35% reductions after 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, respectively. Controls got worse.

Why? The benefits of pomegranate juice is probably from its high free radical scavenging ability–the antioxidants in its phenols, tannins, and anthocyanins, among others. Try Pomegranate Molasses, incredibly concentrated and luscious, has all of these too.

To peel a pomegranate, do so under water. Slice through the skin top-to-bottom, and then slice the halves, quartering it. Catch the seeds in a strainer. Or, POM Wonderful the juice tested in the trial.
