Gastric bypass works for severe obesity, defined as about 50# overweight, or a BMI of 35 or greater. Check your BMI.

Bypass can also treat diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and sleep apnea—in fact, can make them and the medications for them disappear.

So why wait? Because there are unwanted changes in metabolism, changes in fertility, and changes in eating habits and patterns. Plus nutritional deficiencies and the risk of dying from the stomach surgery.

For example, women pregnant after bariatric surgery much more commonly have Cesarean delivery, fertility treatments, premature rupture of membranes, and induced labor than those who don�t.

Most people who opt for surgery have never had a serious medical attempt at a structured program. Some have given up entirely. Others just accept physical, social and emotional limits, feeling as if they’re in a jail, but that another diet would just be a longer sentence. And it could be.

But medical care works, including counseling, even for 50# or 100# weight loss, if you know how, one-on-one.
