The New York Times reports about ground beef safety in the U.S. have been eye-opening, especially if you buy Burger King or McDonalds. Or frozen ground beef.

There is that terrific Times graphic (above) about what makes a “pure ground beef” burger. It starts with 50% fat, and then adds back beef bits, often from 2 countries, thousands of cows, and 4 other ingredients.

There is 12.30.09’s expose, showing ground beef fed to school kids and prisoners alike treated with ammonia (brain-cell killing, household cleaning solvent, anyone?) to kill the high counts of salmonella and e-coli.

The comments are worth reading:
*siralfie: the creepy meat guy that came up with this scam should be tried for murder
*janetvan: real crime here is that “ammonia” is not listed as an ingredient
*dewey: It’s straight out of Upton Sinclair’s 1906 novel, The Jungle, that exposed the horrible exploitive and filthy disease ridden Chicago slaughter houses

However, there is a safe way to eat ground beef occasionally without buying grass-fed, raising your own, or knowing the farmer who raised your burger.

Pick out a fresh not frozen chuck or loin cut at the grocer. Hand it to the butcher. Have him or her grind it. Take it home, form into patties. Cook gently without charring.

One animal, no filler, cleaner burgers. Wellness 2010 style. Stay safe!
