High blood pressure and slightly high cholesterol? A new USDA study shows that whole grains can lower blood pressure for you.
High blood pressure increases the risk of impotence, premature wrinkling, coronary heart disease and stroke. High cholesterol can do the same.
Whole grains work in several ways: soluble fiber significantly lowers cholesterol; insoluble fiber can moderate blood pressure; polyphenols in whole grains increase elasticity of arteries.
Men and women differed in the study: men’s blood pressure dropped most when their whole grains were whole wheat, brown rice and barley. Women’s blood pressures responded best to barley. Eat yours.
