For an average of 7 years, nearly 150 girls, ages 8 to 10 years ate a lower saturated fat, higher fiber diet to lower their LDL (read, lousy) cholesterol levels. Five years into the study, their estrogen and progesterone levels were 30% lower than the control group, just like in adult women.
The results, from a multicenter study, were reported in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute last year.
Lower estrogen levels are thought to lead to less breast cancer—and while there’s no guarantee of that, fewer solid fats (red meats, cheeses, Crisco) and more fruits and vegetables (celery sticks stuffed with real peanut butter count!), are good for all kids.
