A new study shows that over 3 years, of 186 obese kids, 73 had ultrasound tests that looked like Hashimoto’s Disease.
Hashimoto’s Disease is an auto-immune destructive disease. They body’s immune system attacks they thyroid, causing it to fail. The body makes antibodies against the thyroid, by mistake.
In this same study, 23 kids (12%) had both the positive ultrasound test, and the antibodies. That’s diagnostic, and usually requires treatment…here, weight loss. And possibly, thyroid medication.
If you’re kid is overweight, and you need a push–actually, if the whole family needs a push–consider asking your pediatrician whether the thyroid could be harmed by the obesity, and print out a copy of the thyroid obesity study
.
With 23 percent of all U.S. kids (age 2-19) on track to be obese by 2020, we have some work to do…here’s a quickie fact kit.
