There are great models springing up all over for preventing and treating childhood obesity. Here are two.

A Chef Clinic in Newton. Over 10 years ago in suburban Chicago, we began an adventure in cooking, shopping, eating out, mind body control and fitness for adults.

(Chef Clinic® preceded ChefMD, and its new Big Book of Culinary Medicine—check it out).

It worked: my patients lost weight, lowered their cholesterol, got rewards, and changed their lives.

In Newton, Great Moves is a sort of Chef Clinic® for kids: Children’s Hospital has a 6 month program with iTunes gift certificates and points given for attendance. And it starts this month.

In West Virginia, the governor has requested $350,000 for the computer game DDR for his state’s schools, because it works. Kids have so much fun, they don’t realize they’re exercising.

Universities are working too: Tufts has excellent tools and tookits, plus other websites for community leaders, families and schools, online and free. And its Shape Up Somerville program is a winner.
