Can food cause the metabolic syndrome?

Posted in: Diabetes, Food FAQ's, High Cholesterol

Yes—a high calorie, very lowfat, high (simple) carb diet can worsen the metabolic syndrome, and probably cause it.   A high carbohydrate diet causes the over secretion of insulin.  Insulin has 2 main functions—putting glucose into cells for energy, and storing fat.

Fatty meats and whole-milk dairy products don’t help.  Neither do fried foods, especially those fried in fryer oil or shortening or both.  Butter and anything made with hydrogenated fats—most hard as a log margarines, commercially baked cookies, cakes, pastries.

Can I prevent metabolic syndrome if it runs in my family?

Posted in: Diabetes, Food FAQ's, High Cholesterol, Hypertension

Yes.  Family members who are sedentary or obese or both are more likely to develop this disease.  The way to prevent it is with regular exercise, and with weight (especially fat) loss.
